Drilling holes in the piers and adding post brackets

After letting the concrete cure for a few days I came back to add my galvanized post brackets. Each bracket that I was using has a ½” diameter rebar attached that is about 8” long, so I hammer drilled a hole into the top of each pier at the center point for each post. I then put some PL Premium glue into each hole and inserted the rebar of each bracket into the holes, making sure they were squared correctly to the house.

Once the brackets were installed I was ready to start cutting and notching the posts for my beam.  The posts for my deck were pressure treated 4×6 and I notched them to accept my beam, which is 2 – 2x10x12 pressure treated boards, glued and nailed together.

Each post was now set into a bracket and they were plumbed in all directions before I lagged screwed them in place on the bottom of the galvanized brackets.

deck posts and beamAfter the posts were ready, I put my beam in place and double check the measurements from the outside edges of the beam to the posts and also the distance between each post, making sure everything was correct before I screwed the beam in place to the notch in the posts. Once the beam was fastened with a few screws, I then drilled two holes through the beam, through the post as well to insert some ½” galvanized carriage bolts and bolted them off.

Attaching The Ledger Board To The House

The ledger board can now be prepared to attach to the house. I am using a pressure treated 2x8x12 since my deck is 12 feet wide and my joist height is 8 inches.

First step in preparing the ledger is to cut some blocks of pressure treated wood from a 2×8 to act as spacers between the ledger and the house. I cut these at 2in widths and attached them to the house with screws and glue every 16 inches apart. I then attached my ledger to the spacers with screws but this is not enough to support a ledger board. We must ledger board lag screwed to houseeither carriage bolt or lag screw the ledger to the house.  First I marked my joist locations on the ledger board so I knew where to drill holes for the lag screws. I then marked on the ledger the locations of the holes to be drilled making sure to stagger each bolt from the other so they are not located on the ledger in a horizontal line. (This staggering is necessary so we eliminate the chance the ledger board could split when under load) After drilling I inserted some concrete inserts for lag screws since I was attaching to concrete. You may be luckier then I was and be installing into wood here which is certainly much easier then drilling 40 year old concrete. Lets say it took me awhile to do the drilling for these lag screws.

The ledger board is now installed and this is a good time to add flashing above the board and your house before installing the joists.
