There are many homes out there that greatly benefit from a nice deck. While this is true, maintaining one is not as simple as 1-2-3. There are a few things that you should do in order to make your deck look great and last longer. Continue reading if you would like to know what they are.

Beautiful Cedar DeckCheck your deck regularly for loose boards. This is one of the most important deck maintenance tips you will ever read. Many people use their deck to entertain and spend time with those they care about. Unfortunately, a badly maintained deck can lead to slips, falls and other related injuries. It is a good idea to push on each of the boards in your deck every once in a while to make sure that they are still sturdy. If you notice that any of them are particularly loose, it would be best if you fixed it right away.

Make sure that you use a cleaner that is appropriate for the material your deck is made of. Decks are made of different materials, so you cannot expect to use the same solution for all of them. For example, if your deck is made of vinyl, you will only have to use mild soap and water to get it clean, while a composite deck will need something a bit stronger. Using an inappropriate cleaner may result in damage to your deck.

If you notice any nails sticking out of your deck, do not try to pull them out. There are some instances where doing this can cause the wood to cleave. The best way to take care of nails would be to take a hammer and bang them down until they are no longer protruding. Loose nails are very common, especially with wooden decks, so make sure that you check periodically to make sure that there are no issues. In the event that you attempt to bang a nail in and there is far too much resistance, there is a chance that you may have to remove that piece of the deck and replace it with another.

Whether you believe it or not, trees and shrubs can wreak havoc on the health of a deck. This is because it can promote the growth of moss and/or mold. Ideally, these plants should be at least a foot from the deck. If there is no way for you to make sure that the plants are that distance away, you need to talk to someone at your local home improvement store about purchasing something to treat the deck and prevent any issues.

Buying nice furniture and using it to spruce up your deck is part if the fun of having one. Be careful when you buy furniture for your deck since some of it can cause damage. There should be pads on the bottom of most of the items to prevent surfaces from becoming scratched. If that is not the case, it is possible for you to buy the materials and place pads on it yourself. Another thing you should think about is moving the deck furniture around from time to time. Many people don’t know this, but allowing things to stay in the same position on your deck for extended periods can result in serious discoloration.

While taking good care of a deck is not child’s play, it does not have to be the hardest thing in the world either. Use the tips above if you want to know how to maintain your deck. This is very important since a terrible deck can dramatically change the look and feel of your entire home.
